Sorry Health Care System

Sitting in that hospital room, I thought about an incident long time ago, about 9 years, I would say. I took one of my cousins to hospital, to get his ear checked up. He was having hearing problems. Bir Hospital, we went, bought a Rs 10 ticket and got his clogged ear cleaned. I had to pretend and lie to the doctor in the ENT that I was a Doctor doing internship there to get ahead in the line, but it was merely an action in struggle for live, performing "survival of the fittest." We stood in line for few hours, but it was finished and he came home happy, and for many years he thanked me.

Today I live in America, arguably the richest and most sophisticated country, perhaps the most advanced country in medicine yet when I go with an earache to a hospital; I have to come back with a chest pain. I go to the doctor because over the weekend I had such a terrible, strange earache that I never before. The doctor looked at it couple of time with a machine, and performs a “hearing test”. I had to repeat after her: hotdogs, airplane, boy, germs, tennis. Neither she found any wax, nor infection or anything wrong at all, sent me with - "Come back if the pain does not disappear."

Outside, the nurse was waiting for my credit card. “Your insurance does not cover hearing test. I need to collect $150 for hearing test and another $50 for co-pay and may be $500 will come by, in mail, in a week.” My heart started to hurt more than my ear. I thought- what a pity, what a shame for such system of treatment in this country? what a poorer guy will do? Die of ear ache? Mess up his credit so he can live in poverty all his life? Die of shame because he could not take care of his children? Go live under a bridge? I am tired of people, in hospitals, considering and treating a sick person as a source of money. They see human body like Humphrey Bogart thinks of gold in “Treasure of Sierra Madre”. They make those sick people fill unlimited insurance questions, paperwork, not to mention their form was computerized, PDA style, fancy electronic, and had a survey at the end. A poor dying person, irritated already, angered by rude nurses, frustrated by not so courteous fellow patients, why would care about the quality of their information collecting system? It was adding insult to the already boiling irritation caused by their stupidity. I thought of Munna Bhai for a little bit, a good message in a sense, of love not just medicine. I thought about little Jenson and his parents, I thought about Subash my cousin brother, who died of brain tumor and my aunt who I could not face because every time I went to see her, in me, she would see her own son and weep. The agony, burden of such things, before which my silly complain seems stupid, is very hard to explain in religious terms. Nothing better can be said other than “God had better plans for you”

I was angry with my parents for a while because they did not tell me how wicked, crooked and materialistic this world is. I have found this world is full of con men, cheaters, robbers, liars, thieves, killers, rappers and many more opportunistic jackals. It is a place of arrogant, stupid animals trying to become richer, prestigable, and stronger than others, so that they are glorified of their qualities, richness, speeches, money and what not. They lied to me saying, this world is good, full of honest, humble, spiritual people and God intervenes, time and again to help them, in his divine forms, one way or another.

Even Rana’s in Nepal established Bir Hospital. It has served many middle class families. Although it was slow and closed at ‘political times,’ it was better than private hospitals and clinics in Nepal where I would take my  grandmother, who would in the end complain and argue with the doctor when he asked for Rs200, in her own words- “just to touch a wrist twice”. Health care in America is worse than most, if not the worst. I repeat- worse than many third world countries. It is sad and ironic. If you ask me today I will tell you--not HIV, not Hepatitis nor Leprosy but poverty is the greatest disease of all, before ignorance. Health mostly is just luck, and No, I won't lie to myself, God intervening days are gone, I wish of it, of course, but alas it the bitter truth- Only a sufferer knows the pain, as they say --only Khukuri will feel resistance of Karda and Karda will feel the blow of Khukuri.

An Upsetting Week.

What a week.  One retarded clown makes fun of his intelligence in the court, making hilarious comments and getting scolded by the judge many times but wins the case anyway. The whole tension has shifted somewhere.  Nobody cares about the little baby that died. They still don't know who the killer is, how, when, where, why...? And its not about the baby and justice anymore. It's now about the juror's addiction to what they got "celebrity status", money from interviews, possible book signing, etc. Shame on the defense lawyer, the jurors and their motives!  He and one of those "articulate" jurors said- "There were circumstantial evidences but nothing beyond reasonable doubt, we may feel different in our heart but....  Not guilty does not mean anything..." Yes if she is not guilty who is?? Jurors? System? Why put some mediocre jurors in such a sensitive case and make fun of a dead baby? Why a clown now starts bragging about his student life at law school and a middle of road career and not bothered about the justice that was not done. Which is important-the fact that the baby's killer is not yet punished or the fact that it was a case which a clown wins?

This week has shown how weak is this American justice system. This incident shed light on the safety of little kids in USA. I can't believe how far a pathetic woman can go just to participate in a "hot body" contest, and how people can be greedy to gain some popularity. Shame on these idiots! But one thing I am assured, justice will be done one day. Everyone will be judged- the jurors, the lawyers, mothers, her parents and the judge. I wish this happens right here, in this earth sooner than later.

Justice on Earth

Casey Anthony got away. Not guilty. Almost the whole world is surprised. I was following it closely. I can't really make up my mind to call her guilty or not. But it has triggered something in my mind again.

There are times, when I wonder what would Jesus or Krishna or Buddha would do or suggest to do in this case. Would they say "wait till the murderer show up in heaven/hell?" Krishna said- you should fight for justice, even give your life to preserve righteousness in society. If you die-heaven. If you win-good job, you will still be rewarded in this earth. Krishna's philosophy has failed miserably in India. Jesus Christ calls for forgiveness, turning other cheek. Neither of their statements were directed to anything like the situation here. Still, I don't see how it fits to modern society. I am blank. Anyway,  Sometimes it bothers me to see the lack of award and punishment system in this world. I care after death too. Justice will be done, I am happy but what about now, this life? What about the justice in this life? What about punishment and rewards in this life? Why good people suffer, live in poverty, suffer with disease, betrayed, killed, forced to drink poison? Why the antagonists are rich, happy, healthy? Psychologists say that even in the most evil heart, there is a soft corner where stays a remorse, a voice that tells them that they are wrong, in their subconscious mind; somewhere, they cry with pity for themselves. I have searched so many evil souls, looked each and every corners of their heart and failed to see any silver lining. It just has black clouds. Are they going to be punished?  The suffering of this world is true. May be its not as bad as ever lasting suffering but it is suffering of course. Only sufferer knows the pain. The wealth, happiness of this world may be materialistic and illusion, but its real for this world. It is short and of not much importance but its true to enjoy it. Why not make it simple? Good work-reward, Bad work- punishment. Here and there, everywhere.

I have tried most of my life, the "forgiving" Jesus mentioned in his life, but how much can I forgive? How can can I compromise on my own human intelligent reasoning and turn my cheek? What if the other guys never had that remorse corner that psychologists claim? What if I lose the war? Should I keep going on forgiving or start fighting and confronting? Should I fight to kill snakes, that spoil the society? Is it my duty? Jesus also called Herold "Fox" and Scribes and Pharisees "fools, hypocrites, blind guides, whited sepulchers, murderers, a generation of snakes. He didn't turn his cheek on the temple incident, did he? He turned over tables, and verbally tortured tax collectors(money exchangers), people who were selling doves and cattle. He drove all the cattle out of there. What should we really do? Should we build countries and armies? Should we build a justice system with courts and cops? Are we obligated? Even if we do, can we judge fairly? Are we capable of delivering unbiased verdict? OR should we just remain aloof, hoping for the best, drink poison, stoned to death or put on cross? Should we let the snakes, foxes rule and remain weak and exposed to suffering when there could be better options?

Few years, I have tried hardly to keep out of these jackals and snakes. I am finally frustrated because I don't believe these jackals has any remorse in their heart, and I see them slipping away from punishment, no suffering, no sympathy for the innocent lamb they have butchered, still smiling sarcastically and walking away. They never really acknowledged my forgiveness. My so called "good deed" are not rewarded. Not that I expect reward or apology from the snakes, but I don't want suffering for good deeds either. Where is the motivation in that? I don't want to crucified, because I am not Jesus, and my crucifixion means nothing to anyone. Nobody will write gospels on me for I am not worth a dime. I am just a piece of invisible dust in this vast universe. Who cares about me and my good deeds? Even my own heart is not happy when I see "bad deed performing pretentious jackals" salivating by the side, or a snake trying to swallow a frog. Is it my ignorance that I keep feeding milk to a snake? God! I can't wait much.

A Letter

Recently got a letter from my school principal, K. P. Ghimire. Very melancholic letter...He reminded me of our past days, how I was an intregal part of the school establishement, how he got into the circle of creating a examplary Boarding school system and how he regarded me his best students ever, even after so many years. He sold the school. It is sad. He worded it different, he said he transfered the ownership to a reputed, capitalistic school group in Nepal called NIST. If that still made me sad, I don't think, wording it different made it easier for him. He had his life's investment on it, not just money. He also told me about financial losses, and how he did not do anything for profit but for social, educational sophistication in modern Nepal. I am not very business minded but I could feel his pain. I understand how deeply ambitious he was, how hard he tried, how he did not leave any stone unturned. I don't want him to think that its was a failure. I wish not to call it a failure. The school has produced many brilliant students, have heard that most of them are doing well.

He wants me to send him my hand written Nepali letter. He wants to know my comment about it. So sweet of him, he was only of my many beloved teachers, who thought I could be an interesting creative writer. We had few minor confrontations, but he is a good human, who ask about his student, who cared to write to a student out of thousands he taught, and whom he could have easily forgetton. He always said hand-written letters are the best.

I sure remember how we were teased that the school's name "Panchakumari Boarding" and it was not an "only girls" school. What is in the name anyway? I have seen many criminals named Jesus. It was an ironly, alright.
When I remember him, I think of his hard work, dedication and his big ambition to make that school system a legendary one. He writes- we can't get anything sooner and anything more than what has alreday been written in fate. Oh God!! I am a big believer. True- not all good works get success, not all dedications bring fortune, not all Karma brings fruits. It is the system. It is very sad, very unfair. I don't agree with this system but I guess that is God's way.

Man can fall in love with anything, even with soulless things, sometimes, memories and dreams. It is all good. No harm in that. It creates a senstive human-super human. Insesntive, loveless people are just like old, broken chairs abandoned in Highways. Loves brings the best in us. Love brings senstivity, peace, creativity, sprituality, energy and a quest for living. When I will go back and not find my childhood school, my heart will ache. Life goes on, people are born, they die, new people will be born. Memories will deepen in the innermost core of any sensitive person, anywhere he goes in the existance. I hope things go better for him. I have to write a Nepali letter, after a long time, and even as stuborn, and overly confident as I am with my abilities in Nepali language, I feel hesitatation to write to a teacher, who taught me the basics of nepali literature.

I will pray; God will bless him in his future quest.
